Document Summary
Restored plans: what the building would have looked like when it was fully in tact. First pylon: first entrance one would walk through. Sunken reliefs: decorations on the columns in the hypostyle hall, hieroglyphics and images, painted and colorful. Columns in the center are taller in order to create clerestory windows. Oldest and first type of structure that allowed light to shine in. Overwhelmed and small because the space is large and dark. The scale of the columns are meant to make visitors feel very small. The temple of karnak is dedicated to amen-re (the sun god) Darkness signifies mysterious experience that wasn"t available to anyone except the priest. Only certain rituals were available to the general public. Light through the clerestory reminds visitors of the importance of the place. Importance of the walls makes it a citadel, structure surrounded by walls. The citadel (or acropolis) of tiryns is built up on a hill.
