Document Summary

Avery welch organic chemistry chapter 10: reactions of alkenes & alkynes weeks 10-11. Introduction to reactions of alkenes & alkynes (intro) w10 3/28/16 m. When you complete this chapter, you should understand the following points: alkenes react as br nsted-lowry bases in the presence of strong mineral acids, hx. The reaction of alkenes and mineral acids (hx) generate the more stable carbocation, leading to substitution of x at the more substituted carbon. This constitutes the mechanism of the reaction but it is given the name markonikov addition: more highly substituted carbocations are generally more stable. Alkynes react to give vinylhalonium ions that lead to vinyl dihalides: hocl and hobr react with alkenes to give halohydrins, in ether solvents, borane adds to alkenes via a 4-centered transition state to give an alkylborane. Borane adds by a cis-addition that places the boron on the less substituted carbon as the major product.
