Document Summary

Chapter 8 - energy and enzymes: an introduction to metabolic pathways. What happens to energy in chemical reactions? free energy - describes the amount of energy that is available to do work. At a molecular level, the energy of motion is called thermal energy. Potential energy is energy that is associated with position or configuration. In molecules, this is referred to as chemical energy and is stored in the position of electrons. The amount of potential energy in an electron is based on its position relative to other electrons and the protons in the nuclei of nearby atoms. If an electron is close to negative charges on other electrons and far from the positive charges in nuclei, it has high potential energy. If the electron falls to a lower shell, its potential energy is converted to the kinetic energy of motion. After the electron occupies the lower electron shell, it undergoes a change in potential energy.
