Document Summary

Cultural learning- depends on the uniquely human capacity to use symbols. Symbols- signs that have no necessary or natural connection to things they stand for, or signify. Enculturation- people gradually absorb and internalize their particular culture. Culture- previously establish system of meanings and symbols that helps guide their behavior and perceptions throughout their lives. Conscious and unconscious learning, interaction with others, or observation. Culture is shared: culture is an attribute of members of groups, transmitted socially, provides common experiences. Culture and nature: takes natural biological urges we share with other animals and teaches us how to express them in particular way. People need to eat, culture teaches them what, when, and how. Culture is all-encompassing and integrated: most significant cultural forces happen during enculturation, usually during childhood, culture systems are patterned and integrated. If the economy changes, then other parts of the culture change too: core values- key, basic, and central values shared between members.
