These theories help us to better understand, explain, and predict leadership and leaders. No single theory fully explains all aspects of leadership or all success factors in leaders. By using several theories, we can more fully understand these leaders and what enabled them to succeed. The best leadership approach seemed to vary from situation to situation and from person to person: the best approach was contingent, which meant that it depended on something. Further studies and theorizing led to deeper understanding of how effective leadership depended on three contingencies: characteristics of the leader. Relationship with leader: characteristics of the situation. It would not work well with introverted followers: the leader should adjust to a less chatty style. Contingency example based on the situation : a personal care home leader might prefer to have long group discussions to lead staff to collaboratively make team decisions.
