Document Summary

Epidemiology defined as the study of the distribution and determinants of disease frequency in the human populations . First epidemiologist must define disease in clear way. Health outcome is more accurate description of what is studied. In measuring disease frequency, necessary to count number of cases related to size of population being studied, to yield a rate. Two types of frequency measures commonly used: incidence and prevalence rates. Incidence - rate of new cases of a disease in a defined population over a defined period of time. Measures probability healthy person in population is at risk. Useful in identifying causes of a disease. Prevalence - total number of cases existing in a defined population at a specific time; generally measured by a survey. Most useful for assessing societal impact of a disease and planning for healthcare services. Relationship b/w incidence and prevalence rates depends on relationship on how long people live with the disease.
