Interpersonal relationships: attachments in which bonds of family or friendship tie together 2 or more individuals. A person"s identity is shaped by their social relationships. We all need, not just desire, to belong. Consequences when we want to belong but are not able to: ex. Mortality rates are higher among divorced, unmarried, and widowed individuals. Communal and exchange relationships: communal relationship: the individuals feel a special responsibility for one another and give and receive based on need (long term) People tend to resemble one another: exchange relationship: individuals feel little responsibility towards one another. Giving and receiving focused on equity and reciprocity. Short term: societies differ in which they prefer. Even the most intimate relationships are based on rewards of some sort. Virtue of simplicity: people tend to like those that provide them with rewards. Social exchange theory: assumption that people are motivated to maximize their own feelings of satisfaction, rewards should exceed the costs, certain standards.
