Document Summary

Lecture - luther"s ideas of lack of free will within the church. If only god"s grace can save us (sola gratia), then we can do nothing. In his essay on the bondage of the will (1524) luther argues against the humanist, erasmus, that in spiritual matters man has no free will. No human being can contribute at all to the possibility of salvation but is saved only through the grace of god. Also very strong in theology of john calvin (1509-1564); predestination . We will see that these are very radical, powerful, and destabilizing ideas. He says he supports the pope yet criticizes the institution of the church. He could be working toward reform within the church, helping the pope. Luther knew he was going to cause a break with the catholic church. The essay outlines a theology opposed to the church"s doctrine.
