In 2004, depression was recognized as the largest contribution to the burden of disease in middle & high income countries. Women are 1. 5 times more likely to suffer from major depression & 1. 6 times more likely to suffer from an anxiety disorder. Generalized anxiety disorder is almost 2x as likely in women than men. Women are less than half as likely to have an alcohol or drug disorder. There is a smaller difference between genders regarding alcohol abuse. A black person is likely to suffer from a mental disorder 70% of the likelihood a white person will. Meaning white people are more likely to have disorder. Those divorced are twice as likely to have a mental health disorder. At least 1 manic episode needs to occur. Recently was estimated as high as 4% prevalence. Heritability from 60-85% (higher rate than depression)
