PSC 154 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Culture Of Asia
Document Summary
Cultures" perceptions of emotions, particularly between the western and asian cultures, differ greatly. In western cultures, emotions were once as irrational, but during the romanticism era, emotions became an important part of life. From a cultural standpoint, emotions result from cultural processes themselves, emotions are roles that people fulfill as part of their identity or relationships, and we can understand emotion best when viewing how they are practiced in daily life. Independent self-construal is defined as individualism, which is valued by the western culture. Interdependent self-construal is defined as finding one"s identity within a community, which aligns more with the beliefs of asian culture. Values are important principles that govern our social behavior, and different cultures have different values. Each culture also has their own elicitors of different emotions, meaning that certain situations in one culture would elicit an emotion that, in another culture, would not affect an individual at all.
