PSC 126 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Innate Immune System, Friendly Fire, Adaptive Immune System
Document Summary
Ex: giving fake rose to someone allergic to roses -> they get an allergic response. Stress - induced immunosuppression can increase the risk & severity of some diseases. Defends the body against infectious agents (viruses, bacteria, fungi, & parasites) When infectious agent encountered, immune system can form an immunologic memory of what the agent looks like. B- cells mature in the bone marrow. Acquire the ability to target pathogen x specifically, w/ antibodies & cell - mediated immunity that specifically recognize that pathogen. It takes time to build immunity when 1st exposed to pathogen x. Involves finding which antibody has the best fit & generating many copies of it. When prepared for that specific pathogen, the repeated exposure to the pathogen will boost those targeted defenses even more. Stress suppresses the formation of new lymphocytes & their release into the circulation. Shortens the time preexisting lymphocytes stay in the circulation.
