Acoustic phonetics - the study of the transmission & the physical properties of speech sounds. Auditory phonetics - the study of the perception of speech sounds. In articulatory phonetics, phoneticians used x-ray photography to investigate what parts of the mouth are used and how to produce sound. They also use palatography to observe contact between the tongue and the roof. In acoustic phonetics, they use tools such as the sound spectrograph to take pictures of the sounds. In auditory, the simplest & most basic method of phonetic analysis is the impressionistic phonetic transcription. Ipt is a method of writing down speech sounds in order to capture what is said & how it is pronounced.
