CMN 122 Chapter Notes - Chapter 47: Lie Detection, False Positives And False Negatives, Machiavellianism
Document Summary
Pons (profile of nonverbal sensitivity) test - test that assesses how well a person can interpret nonverbal messages. Signs of dishonesty - smiling, stammering, fidgeting, vagueness, long pauses in speaking, & answers that seem too quick, too short, too long, or too elaborate. Researchers compared the signs that observers used to detect lies with the behavior that actually accompanied lies. They found that most of the presumed clues did not correlate with deception. There are no foolproof signs of lying. Voice pitch is a more dependable indicator than facial expression. Results point to the value of words. If you"re going to tell a lie, you are better off face-to-face. Particularly the tone in which they are spoken, as clues to lie detection. On tape, people hear inflections & tonal qualities that leak their feelings but are unnoticed by them as they speak. Different kinds of body language provide better clues to deception than others.
