Document Summary
Psych 101 jan 25 reading sensation and perception. Sensation: the physical process during which our sensory organs respond to external stimuli: sense organs engage in transduction: the conversion of one form of energy into another. Perception: the physiological process making sense of the stimuli. Absolute threshold: minimum amount of stimulation in order to detect a stimulus: we can measure absolute thresholds by using signal detection. Process involves presenting stimuli of varying intensities to a research participant in order to determine the level at which he or she can reliably detect stimulation in a given sense. Differential threshold / just noticeable difference (jnc: the change necessary to be detectable, we(cid:271)er"s la(cid:449) Bigger stimuli require larger differences to be noticed. Building up to perception from individual pieces: top-down processing. When a stimulus is constant and unchanging, we experience sensory adaptation. We become less sensitive to this stimulus.
