Document Summary

Who"s in and who"s out: results of oppression. Preferred roles in culture are reserved for dominants, and they define the acceptable roles for the subordinates. The dominants determine the philosophy, values, and morality of the society. Prejudice is an unfairly negative attitude towards members of a particular group. Discrimination is a biased action toward members of a particular group. Distinction between individuals and institutions should be noted. Institutions may support policy or practice that is prejudicial and discriminatory. Power imbalance between subordinates and dominants may explain horizontal hostility". Members of subordinate group express hostility to members of their own group because it is safer. Perception of vertical hostility s another factor that contributes to oppression. Dominants may believe that they are subject to hostility from those with lower status. These privileges consist of automatic assumptions that the dominant groups generally do not recognize. E. g. heterosexuals do not realize many benefits they have, ease of marriage, able to pda, etc.
