Bandar (kb) in mumbai, india, and then examine how these women operationalize their social capital in response to health crises within their households. Women in kb rely heavily on instrumental and emotional support derived from highly trusted informal social networks. Very few women in kb had access to formal social networks for support. Factors that impeded the ability of women in kb to expand their social capital or leverage their social capital for goals beyond immediate survival: community heterogeneity, poverty strain, and traditional gender roles. Residents of slums are at an increased risk for accident and injury, diarrheal illness, and infectious disease. These communities are marginalized from quality health services. Cost often prohibits the poor from seeking care from qualified private health providers.
