PSY 306 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Explanatory Style, Controllability, Extraversion And Introversion
Document Summary
Causal attribution: construal process people use to explain both their own and others" behavior. Crucial to understanding everyday social behavior because we make causal attributions many times a day. Used throughout our lives to make decisions about day to day things such as tests or asking someone out. Good test grade makes you attribute that you"re smart, bad test grade you may attribute that the test was unfair. Explanatory style: refers to a person"s habitual way of explaining events, assessed along three dimensions: Due to something about them or something about other people or circumstances. Will be present against in the future or not. Something that influences other areas of their lives or just this one. Combined to form an overall explanatory style index which is then correlated with an outcome of interest. Has been shown to relate to people"s physical health, with more optimistic explanatory style predicting good health.
