Document Summary

Econ 330: chapter 10 (banking and the management of financial institutions) (commercial bank balance sheet) Banking plays a major role in the financial system in that it facilitates the channeling of funds to borrowers with productive investment opportunities. An asset is a financial claim or piece of property that is a store of value. A balance sheet is a list of the bank"s assets and liabilities. A bank"s balance sheet is also a list of its sources of funds (liabilities) and uses to which the funds are put that is, assets. Banks obtain funds through borrowing or issuing other liabilities such as deposits. They then use these funds obtained to acquire assets such as securities and loans. Banks earn profit by charging an interest rate on their asset holdings of securities or loans that is higher than interest and other expenses on their liabilities.
