New types of crime emerge as society changes. An offense against persons or property, committed primarily by members of the lower class. Often referred to as street crime or ordinary crime, this type of offense is the one most upsetting to the public. Least profitable to criminals because they are visible. Majority of law enforcement resources are employed to deal with them. Acts against people in which death or physical injury results. Man committed by people known to their victims. Acts that threaten property held by individuals or by the state. Acts that threaten the general well-being of society and challenge accepted moral principles. Ex: public drunkenness, aggressive panhandling, vandalism, and disorderly conduct. Young men & members of minority groups tend to be charged. Criminal offenses committed through opportunities created in a legal business or occupation. Crimes that if done right, are never discovered. Impose huge costs on society (significantly higher than losses due to street crime)
