Personality – People’s typical ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving
Trait – Relatively enduring predisposition that influences our behavior across many situations;
in part, account for consistency in our behavior across time and contexts
• One should be able to adapt their traits according to situational cues; if not they
may have a problem
Twin and Adoption Studies:
• Suggest many personality traits are heritable
• Point to a key role for non-shared environment
• Shared environment plays little to no role in adult personality
• Genes have indirect influence on traits and environment influences how traits are
displayed
Psychoanalytic theory: The controversial Legacy of Sigmund Freud and his followers:
• Important in the history of psychology and to establish basic principles, but
could not be tested so we cannot prove if they were correct

Personality people"s typical ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving. Psychoanalytic theory: the controversial legacy of sigmund freud and his followers: Important in the history of psychology and to establish basic principles, but could not be tested so we cannot prove if they were correct. Psychoanalytic theory rests on 3 core assumptions: psychic determinism, symbolic meaning, unconscious motivation. Being angry at a partner but instead of expressing anger, expressing love. Different situations have the same physical reactions; e. g. Our heart races when we"re angry and when we"re anxious: projection unconscious attribution of our negative qualities onto others.
