Substance intoxication- cause temporary changes in mood, behavior, emotion, or thought: alcohol intoxication- temporary state of poor judgment, mood changes, irritability, slurred speech, and poor coordination, hallucinogen intoxication- (hallucinosis)- consists largely of perceptual distortions and hallucinations. Substances that are misused: depressants, stimulants, hallucinogens, cannabis. Alcohol: alcohol- any beverage containing ethyl alcohol, including beer, wine, and liquor, when people consume 5 or more drinks on a single occasion, it is. Binge drinking: among heavy drinkers- men outnumber women 3-2, ethyl alcohol is absorbed into the bloodstream through the lining of the stomach and intestine. Acts to depress, or slow the functioning by binding to neurons. An amount of alcohol will have more of an effect on a smaller person: women have less of the stomach enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase- which breaks down alcohol in the stomach before it enters the blood. This is why men aren"t effected as much by alcohol.
