Document Summary

Most communicate with only other neurons but many receive information from sensory organs or carry messages from nervous system to other parts of body. Soma: cell body that contains the nucleus and chemical machinery common in cells. Other than soma, rest of neuron is focused on transmitting info. Dendrite: part of neuron that receives the information. Travels into the cell from the dendrite, then away from sona along the axon. Axon: long fiber that transmits signals away from the soma to other neurons or muscles/glands. Myelin sheath: insulating material that encases some axons. Functions to speed up transmitting signals on axon. Stabilizes axon structure and patterns of connectivity. Multiple sclerosis is due to deterioration of this. Terminal buttons: knobs that secrete chemicals called neurotansmitters. Synapse: junction where information is tansmitted from one to another. Cluster at the end of the axon.
