Chapter 17: the final challenge: death and dying. To be dead, one must meet these criteria: Be totally unresponsive to stimuli, including painful ones. Fail to move for one hour and fail to breathe for 3 minutes after being removed from a ventilator. Register a flat electroencephalogram, indicating an absence of electrical activity in the cortex of the brain. Euthanasia - hastening the death of someone suffering from an incurable illness or injury. Active euthanasia - mercy killing ; deliberately and directly causing a person"s death (e. g. administering a lethal dose of drugs to a pain-racked patient). Passive euthanasia - allowing a terminally ill person to die of natural causes (e. g. withholding extraordinary life-saving treatments). Assisted suicide - not directly killing someone, but making available to a person the means to die (e. g. doctor writing prescription for sleeping pills at patient"s request). It"s legal in most states to withhold extraordinary life-extending treatments if that is the dying patient"s wish.
