PSY 145 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Psych, Natural Capital
Document Summary
The question is not about growth per se but about the existence and distribution of growth. Those who postulate a fundamental dispute between economic growth and sustainable human development are doing little good to developing nations. Economic growth isn"t an option to tackle poverty-it"s a need. Growth opportunities must be equitably distributed for the good of the population. So, they have to be viable from one generation to the next. Equity is the root of this definition between generations and inside. One question is what people do with incentives but they shouldn"t be granted fair opportunities to develop their human potential. This wealth also requires other structural reforms: increased distribution of productive assets (including land and credit), open access to business opportunities, a favorable policy environment for employment creation and social security networks for those bypassing the markets. The new threat to sustainability is moving a step deeper into the debate.
