Arguably, today in police departments the subculture and the ideals mentioned above may break down. A variety of factors contribute to potential subculture weakening. One might add that in the 1970s and 1980s, at a period of significant social reform when the supreme court accepted revolutionary due process rights, many of the writers who defined the police culture did so. Older police officers who weren"t socialized to issue alerts to miranda or get search warrants were understandably reluctant to respond to the new order. Today"s recruit officers were born as a normal aspect of arrest after the miranda warning was institutionalized and have never known a time when the police did not require a search warrant. Today"s recruiting is much more likely to have been introduced by media, education, or other avenues to community policing and its principles of community police engagement and other progressive police practices.
