Suprachiasmatic nucleus (scn) : cluster of neurons in hypothalamus receives input from retina regarding light/dark cycles, involved in regulating biological clock. Twilight state : going to sleep, alpha waves, brain-wave pattern mirrors sense of relaxed. Stage 1 : slower pulse, relaxed muscles, side-to-side eye rolling, easily aroused. Stage 2 : lower pulse, blood pressure, body temperature, hard to awaken, Stage 3-4 : very low pulse, blood pressure, body temperature, slow breathing. Rem sleep : increased heart rate, blood pressure, muscles very relaxed, rapid eye unresponsive to stimuli movements, very difficult to awaken. 30-50% of adults regularly fail to get enough sleep. Nearly 80% of adolescents fail to get recommended 9 hours of sleep.
