HUM 140 Chapter Notes - Chapter 15: Olorun, Crested Eagle, Orunmila
Document Summary
The universe began with olorun ruling the sky and olokun ruling the water and marshland. Obatala was not pleased with this and encouraged olorun to give him permission to create solid land on earth. Once he was given permission, obatala went to. Orunmila to get instructions on how he could carry out this task. Orunmila told obatala to find a very long chain, a snail"s shell full of sand, and to take that with several other items down to the marshlands. The goldsmith required a lot of gold and the gods agreed to give obatala all their gold possessions in order for his plan to work. Once his gold chain was made, obtala climbed down to the watery surface of the earth where he dropped the sand from the snail shell, creating dry land. The chicken scattered the sand creating even more dry land.
