Children were raised without physical punishment and were taught to treat each adult can member with the respect accorded to relatives. Families and clans joined forces to hunt and farm. Sioux religion - provided the cement for village and camp life. Thought of life as a series of circles. Were born into circle of relatives, which broadened to the band, the tribe, the sioux nation, and on to animals and plants. Also believed in hierarchy of spirits whose help could be invoked in ceremonies like the sun dance.
