Social perception- the processes by which people come to understand one another. Physical appearance- first impressions are subtly influenced by superficial aspects of a person"s appearance. We also prejudge people based on facial features. Such judgements can lead to important outcomes. Social scripts- we have present notions about certain situations. Functional- enables us to anticipate goals, behaviors, and outcomes likely to occur in a particular setting. Scripts helps us understand other people"s verbal or nonverbal behavior. Changes from culture to culture, college to college, etc. Distorted social perception- we sometimes see what want to see in a situation; if the situation is ambiguous our motivations or expectations fill in the blanks for us. Nonverbal behavior- behavioral cues are used to identify an individual"s inner states and actions. Facial expressions, tone of voice, gestures, eye contact, etc. When we are texting, we lose nonverbal behavior.
