Week 11: dances of modernity i introduction. Mustafa kemal ataturk, the founder of turkish republic, on a visit to bursa eight months before his death. During a ball in his honor, he stops the waltz and begins to dance the tarcan zeybek dance. Picture is taken from the short film last dance waltz and zeybek. In this unit, the dances that we will discuss played a strong role in shaping the modernity of turkey. As dance historian gerald jonas suggests, dance can also be a powerful mechanism of social control and a channel of communication used to pass along important social skills (1). Dance can be used as a social tool in structuring particular social ideals - in turkey"s case, the ideal to become a modern republic. Dance, as an embodied social practice engaged in specific cultural contexts, reflects and reshapes social life at the same time (2).
