Document Summary

Visual pathway: photoreceptors to occipital cortex: photoreceptors, bipolar cells, ganglion cells, optic nerve, optic chiasma, optic tracts, lateral geniculate body of thalamus, optic radiation, occipital lobe. Superior colliculi- for control of extrinsic eye muscles. Pretectal nuclei- mediated pupillary light reflexes, dilate or constrict. Suprachiasmatic nucleus of hypothalamus- circadian rhythm regulated. Sounds- are vibrations of a medium; you need a medium in order to vibrate something for it to travel through: sound travels in compression waves. Vibration of medium- sound travels in compression waves through a particular medium: solid faster liquid gas slowest. Sound as a wave- the series of high pressure and low-pressure areas are called compressions (high density) and rarefactions (low density), respectively. Sine wave- graphic representation of areas of compression and rarefaction of a sound wave. Wavelength- the distance between 2 areas of compression for a given sound wave. Frequency- the number of waves that pass a given point in one second (1/s=1 hertz)
