Exemplar and family-resemblance views are based off of similarity. Exemplar = similarity to examples of a concept. When asked if a small circle is more similar to a pizza or quarter, ppl say quarter bc of the small size. But, when asked if it was a pizza or quarter, ppl said pizza bc the circle is bigger than a quarter. The underlying essence of things dictates what category they are put in. Ppl can use essentialist info and still exhibit graded structure effects. Ppl rate some members of a category as more prototypical. Ppl think of sewer water, tea, and urine to be composed of different %s of water. Ppl adhere to essentialist traits for biological categories, but are willing to change object categories.
