Document Summary

Chapter 10, reading #40: obey at any cost? . Wanted to investigate how people could be capable of carrying out great harm to others simply because they were ordered to do so. Believed that the human tendency to obey is deeply ingrained that it cancels out a person"s ability to behave morally, ethically, or even sympathetically. Also believed that most individuals would never intentionally cause someone physical harm or inflict pain on another unless ordered to do so by a person whom they perceived to be a powerful authority figure. Designed a shock generator that labeled the voltage & the degree of the shock, person receiving the shock was a confederate who wasn"t actually receiving a shock. 40 males recruited for a study about memory and learning , they administered the shock to the confederate every time they got the question wrong. Were paid upfront and told that they could withdraw at anytime regardless of the reason.
