Freud"s stages of child development and piaget"s stages of cognitive development conclude at adolescence the american psychological association responded to these new developments by creating the division on maturity and old age (now called adult development. & aging) once adulthood was recognized as a unique period of life, researchers began to explore new domains (ex: creativity, wisdom, religion, and spirituality) Us government and medical fields began to focus attention on aging. In early years, developmental psychology was primarily the study of child development. As people started to live longer interest in psychological study of adulthood development and aging increased. Childhood development covers about 12 years while adulthood can cover 60 years or more, therefore the age groups are broken up. Although simple chronological age can be easily determined, other measures such as functional age provide a better view of daily functioning: mechanistic, organismic, contextual. The source of change is external to the individual.
