PHIL 1180 Chapter Notes - Chapter 52: Genetically Modified Organism, Environmental Ethics, Urban Sprawl
Document Summary
Are ecosystems organized: doubt as to community structure. Lack of empirical evidence that an ecosystem possesses an element of organization. Even with theoretical and mathematical research, there is no consensus of principles and rules explaining how ecosystems are organized. Ecologists have not agreed on definitions to define ecosystems and communities. Because ecosystem lacks a definition, there is not way to distinguish essential/defining properties. There have been enormous changes in landscapes caused by human beings are these changes representative of evolving ecosystems: aesthetic basis of ecosystem organization. Aesthetic judgments accompany our perception of the natural world. Moral intuitions and aesthetic judgments are convincing that the natural world has order and design. Aesthetic idea: the perception of an object"s unity recognized by the imagination for which no cognitive concept is adequate. Ecosystems are not organized or formed to serve a purpose. Human dominated systems are not less rich in biological diversity.
