Listening is the single most important skill because comm doesn"t exist without a listener. Listening- the process of receiving, constructing meaning from, and responding to spoken and/or nonverbal messages: four stages: hearing, understanding, evaluating, and responding. Hearing (sensing)- the stage when listeners pick up the sound waves directed toward them: hearing the sounds, not the same as understanding and evaluating. Understanding- interpreting the messages associated with sounds or what the sounds mean: the thoughts that are expressed and emotional tone, affects how you will respond, physiologically and communicatively. Remembering- messages that you receive and understand need to be remembered for at least some period of time: sometimes, note taking or recording is considered appropriate.
