• Orographic (topographic) Lifting (Fig. 4.17)
o air ascends up the windward side of mountains that may
produce clouds and precipitation
• Frontal Lifting (Fig. 4.18)
o air masses often collide, forcing ascension
• Convergence (Figs. 4.19, 4.20)
o due to low pressure at the surface
o due to sea-breezes
o if air converges at the surface, it has to rise
• Localized Convective Lift (Figs. 4.21)
o buoyant parcels of air rise due to unequal heating of the
surface creating thermals
