Emperors of the sui dynasty put huge demands on their subjects in the course of building strong, centralized government. They ordered the construction of palaces and granaries, carried out extensive repairs on defense walls, dispatched military forces to asia and korea, levied high taxes and demanded compulsory labor services. This was the most elaborate project undertaken by the sui dynasty. The construction of the grand canal, one of the world"s largest waterworks projects before modern times.
