A temporary matter is the story of a couple, shoba and shukumar, whose electricity is cut off for five days, and in these five days they learn that they are not as similar as they thought. Shukumar recollects on how his wife and him used to be much closer. The story then shifts to a darker tone when shukumar reflects on when his wife went into labor prematurely while he was at a conference out of town. Their child ended up dying due to complications during and after the birth. This story ends up being a story of grief and relationship with this important shared history. While one partner fills her days with work and busy tasks, the other tries to keep busy and complete his university dissertation. The power outage causes the two to review an intimacy that they haven"t felt with each other since their child died.
