How is sociology a science: it"s a social science, you still apply the scientific method but to people. Social theory: study then try to explain, set of statements that seeks to explain problems actions or behavior, good theories explain and predict. Durkheim"s suicide: trying to figure out why some countries have higher suicide rates than other countries, 1980"s, all depends on social cohesion, how tied/ how isolated you are to a society. Types of suicide: alruistic: an extreme where one is tied too closely to society. The individual completely relies on being part of the group and feels that if they can no longer contribute to the group they kill themselves. Elder indians in buffalo hunting tribes: egotistic: another extreme where individuals are too isolated from society. Religious and married people have a much lower suicide rate.
