Ex: hurricane katrina: can see the effects of those who did not evacuate. Social network is more involved in community rather than outside. White people"s social network is usually spread out, makes evacuating easier (always a place to go) Poor people left new orleans and didn"t come back. Those with mortgages are likely to come back (relatively rich), those without didn"t come back. Rumors of riots in downtown baton rouge, scared of new people coming. White woman thought two african americans stole tv, actually paid. Crime rate went up in houston from the evacuees. Older people (80-90) took the hurricane better than younger (60-65) and women were more resilient.
