How have ideas about folk and folk groups changed over time. Folklore used to be viewed as a primitive element of the past. Now it is known to include everything from urban settings, classes, to farm workers. Esoteric beliefs: thoughts about the group talked about by members of the group. Exoteric beliefs: thoughts about the group talked about by people outside of the group. Pitfalls of lumping together folk groups based on ethnicity, religion, age, and so on. Not everyone in each category will be included in the folk groups. Generalizing usually includes more than the actual folk group. Being in close proximity a majority of the time. Shared interests or skills: quilting circles. Folklore is lived, experienced, created, and shared by people. Things of folklore referred to as text even if they are not printed words. Folklore is learned in non-complicated ways without people actually knowing that they are learning.
