Children with little human interaction: feral & isolated children can"t speak; language can still be taught, no language = no culture. Humans lack instincts to replace language: culture --> behaviors, attitudes & values not biology. Who would talk and walk first: findings. Have human bonding and learn language to: develop normal intelligence, be sociable, follow norms. Looking-glass self (cooley: we imagine how we appear to those around us. At first - only take roles of significant others. Eventually take role of group as a whole. Ex: kids pretending to be superheroes, playing house/school.
