Describes the ways people come to understand societal norms and expectations, to accept society"s beliefs, and to be aware of societal values: sigmund freud put forth theory how people develop a sense of self. Believed personality and sexual development were closely linked and divided maturation process into: oral, anal, phallic, latency, and genital. People"s self development is closely linked to early stages of development, like, breast- feeding, toilet training, and sexual awareness: erik erikson created a theory of personality development. Believed personality continued to change over time and was never finished. Theory includes 8 stages of development from birth to death. His view of self development gave credit to social aspects: jean piaget specialized in child development, focusing on role of social interactions in their development. Studied by george herbert mead: imitation, play- imagination.
