Deviance: variation from a set of norms or shared social expectations, any behavior that differs from the norms, deviant is one who deviates, no pants subway in new york, deviance always warrants a response. Traditional views: absolutist view, violated morals, medical, deviants were considered sick and required medical attention, statistical view, most people are not deviant. Contemporary view- defiance is relative; varies by time, place, and situation. Universality of deviance- there is no society of saints; every society has deviants. Increase solidarity: define the limit, safety valve- hitting the wall, facilitate social change- homosexuality. Indicate defects- show defects in rules of society. Dysfunctions of social deviance: disrupt social order, disrupt will to conform, destroy trust, divert resources. Calculation of crime rate by the ucr (by the fbi) Index crimes- homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny/theft, motor vehicle theft, arson: murder is used to calculate the crime rate because all murders are reported at some point.
