Elon had this in the early stages: substance dependence refers to a maladaptive pattern of substance use potentially defined by tolerance and withdrawal. Tolerance refers to the need to ingest greater and greater quantities of a drug to achieve the same effect. Tolerance is a key difference between substance abuse and dependence. Substance withdrawal refers to maladaptive behavioral changes when a person stops using a drug. Physical and behavioral changes can occur like vomiting and depression: types of substances- depressants, stimulants, opiates, hallucinogens, marijuana, etc. depressant drugs are those that inhibit aspects of the central nervous system. Alcohol is the most well known and widely used depressant drug. Alcohol affects gaba which thus inhibits a key inhibitory brain system.
