The two modern ways psychological disorders are currently treated today . Action therapies - aim to directly change disordered or in appropriate behavior. Insight therapies - aim to enhance understanding or self (one"s motives and actions) We will look at four major forms of psychotherapy based on different theories on human nature: psychoanalytical theory, humanistic theory, behavioral theory, cognitive theory. The first formal psychotherapy to emerge was psychoanalysis developed by sigmund freud. Unconscious conflict (between id, ego and superego) Reliance on defense mechanism to keep repressed, and thus resulting disorder manifest content and latent content. Psychoanalysis is an insight therapy that emphasizes the recovery of unconscious conflicts, motives, Freud developed the method of dream analysis to interpret elements of a patient"s dreams. Freud believed repressed material often surfaced in dreams which included manifest content and latent content. Freud adopted the method of free association to unravel the unconscious mind and its conflicts.
