There are multiple types of memory- it is not one thing in one place in the brain. One prominent model is the information-processing model of memory. Information-processing model external sensory events encoding sensory memory selective attention short-term memory maintenance rehearsal or consolidation long-term memory retrieval. Holds info from the senses for a very brief duration. Each sense has a sensory memory associated with it. Showed people an array of letters very fast. Cued to remember a certain row after seeing the letters. This showed that people could remember more than they could report. The magic number is 7, plus or minus 2. Activated memory that holds a few items briefly. E. g. , the 7 digits of a phone # while dialing, before the information is stored or forgotten. One view is that it is made up of three storage systems: Plus an executive control system called the central executive. This component was proposed to account for storage of multi-modal information.
