Document Summary

Imagery is the greatest tool an author can use to enhance and create an evocative visual experience for the reader. In homer"s famously descriptive tale, the iliad, imagery is the backdrop to all of the greatest scenes presented. Homer uses nature as the main source of his imagery during battle scenes. It also allows the irony of certain situations amongst the characters to be realized. The battlefield is a warrior"s stage where he can reveal his worth, his glory. A warrior"s death is his final scene, his honor and distinction has been officially achieved once he treads off the stage of life. Patroclus is one of the strongest and skilled warriors amongst the achaean ranks. Patroclus, after achilles refuses to participate in battle, realizes that he must take it upon himself to portray his worth to his own country by leading the achaean ranks to troy to win back the tide of the battle.
