Journey begins when people are successful at a specialist task & are promoted. Need to be able to get things done thru others. Requires leadership & network building not command & control but getting things done thru your ability to influence & persuade others. Tends to be large differences between expectations & reality; more than telling others what to do & the job tends to be fragmented with multiple issues requiring attention: mastering the job. Initially, managers believed their job was to exercise formal authority and manage tasks. After 6 months : managers were surprised by pace and workload, realized subordinates wanted help solving problems they couldn"t solve. After 1 year : realized that people management is most important; i. e. people challenges are the biggest challenge.
